June 22, 2015 by David Siegel on June 22, 2015

Northern Virginia’s Company Danzante will perform at the prestigious Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in Massachusetts on June 26, 2015. Company Danzante will perform repertory by Co-Directors, Katherine Horrigan and Arturo Garcia.

“We are honored for the invitation to represent the D.C. region’s contemporary dance scene and present our company’s work at the Pillow. It will be a privilege to immerse the artists of Danzante in the dance history and inspiring surroundings of the Pillow.” said Horrigan

Company Danzante Contemporary Dance is a professional repertory dance company, serving the DC area community since its founding in 2013. The company seeks to cultivate and promote excellence in contemporary dance while contributing to the vitality of the community through performances, artistic collaborations, educational programs, and outreach activities.

The company has already presented works at the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, Atlas INTERSECTIONS Festival, Velocity Dance Festival, Dance Bethesda, and has toured.

The Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival presents diverse dance styles.  For the Festival, Company Danzante will present Horrigan’s Collected Remnants and Garcia’s Here and Now commissioned by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

“As a former student of the School of Jacob’s Pillow and later professional performer at the Ted Shawn Theatre with Tania Perez-Sales Dance Company along-side husband and Co-Director Arturo Garcia, the Pillow holds special significant in my own development as an artist,” said Horrigan. “Arturo and I are grateful for the opportunity to present our work now as choreographer and to pass on the Pillow’s artistic tradition to our own dancers.”

Horrigan and Garcia were recently awarded a 2015 Strauss Artist Grant through the Arts Council of Fairfax County.  The award honored their dance work as contemporary artists.

The Strauss Artist Grants program recognizes outstanding contemporary artist in the Fairfax and helps support their future contributions to the arts and our communities” said Linda S. Sullivan, president and CEO of the Arts Council of Fairfax County. The program is named for Bill Strauss (1947-2007) gifted writer, co-founder of the Capitol Steps and the CAPPIES.

In accepting the Strauss Grant, they spoke of providing new opportunities for young dancers in the region.  “We have evolved from performers to teachers and our hope is to be able to continue exploring new choreographic ideas and methods of composition while expanding our choreographic voices”. Said Horrigan.

In a recent interview, Horrigan spoke of contemporary dance as a powerful source of expression and communication able to captivate minds and stimulate the senses.

Company Danzante will be performing at Jacob’s Pillow Festival, “Outdoor Inside/Out.” Performances are on Henry J. Leir Stage at the Marcia and Seymour Simon Performance Space – 358 George Carter Road, in Becket, Massachusetts. The performance is this Friday, June 26, 2015 at 6:15 p.m. Tickets are free.
